1889 – Birth of Roger Amedee Del’Haye, Canadian World War I flying ace.

1911 – Joseph Joel Hammond reaches a speed of almost 50 mph and an altitude of 2,500 feet while giving a demonstration attended by the governor of Western Australia.

1952 – Death of Antonie Strassmann, German aviatrix and actress.

1955 – The Vickers Valiant, a British four-engined jet bomber (shown), enters service with the Royal Air Force No. 138 Squadron.

1963 – First flight of the Yakovlev Yak-36, a Soviet VTOL combat demonstrator.

2003 – TANS Perú Flight 222, a Fokker F28, crashes on approach to Chachapoyas Airport in Perú; all 46 on board die.
