1943 – Death of Edward Henry “Butch” O’Hare (shown), Irish-American U.S. Navy pilot; he was the service’s first World War II flying ace and a Medal of Honor recipient who went missing in action in his Grumman F6F Hellcat during the first USN nighttime fighter attack from an aircraft carrier.
