1895 – Birth of Leroy Randle “Roy” Grumman, American aeronautical engineer, test pilot, and industrialist. He also co-founded Grumman Aeronautical Engineering Co. later to become Grumman Aerospace Corp., and now part of Northrop Grumman.
1931 – William G. Swan stays aloft for 30 minutes over Atlantic City, New Jersey, in a glider powered with 10 small rockets.
1945 – First flight of the Chase YCG-14 (shown), an American prototype assault glider.
1958 – Death of Sir Edwin Alliott Verdon Roe, pioneer English pilot and aircraft manufacturer; he was the founder of the A.V. Roe Aircraft Co., later known as Avro.
1964 – Pope Paul VI lands in Amman, Jordan, in a special Alitalia DC-8; it is the first time that a pope uses an airplane for an official visit.
2008 – A Transaven Let L-410 Turbolet loses both engines, ditching off the Venezuelan coast near the Los Roques archipelago; all 14 aboard are killed.
