Nine vintage military aircraft took to the skies above Harlingen’s Rebel Field in 1963, marking the Commemorative Air Force’s first warbird show dedicated to air stunts and flight aerobics.
The tradition continues five decades later in the Permian Basin’s backyard with the CAF’s 50th annual AirSho on Oct. 12-13 at Midland International Airport. This year’s milestone lineup features appearances by the organization’s fleet of 159 warbirds — including the world’s only flying Boeing B-29 Superfortress, “FIFI,” and Consolidated B-24 Liberator “Diamond Lil” — and performances by the Texas Flying Legends, the world’s smallest microjet and a jet-propelled Shockwave truck.
“This year’s AirSho is a very complex event. There’s a lot of moving parts,” said CAF President and CEO Stephan Brown.
