An retired General Dynamics F-111C Aardvark, known by its Royal Australian Air Force number A8-113, will be transported by road from RAAF Base Amberley to the Aviation Historic Society Museum in Darwin.
The road convoy, with the aircraft on a low loader with wings and tail transported separately, will also stop at selected towns along the way to allow for public inspection of the iconic aircraft. The convoy will leave RAAF Base Amberley at 2 a.m. on Tuesday and plans to arrive in Darwin about 1 p.m. on Sunday. The aircraft will overnight in Roma, Longreach, Mount Isa, Three Ways, and RAAF Base Tindal at Katherine before arriving in Darwin.
The F-111 fleet was retired by the Royal Australian Air Force during December 2010 after 37 years of service.
