San Diego Air Wing Draws Marine Aviation Awards

Two U.S. Marines from a helicopter squadron in California’s Camp Pendleton who battled insurgents during the attack on Camp Bastion in Afghanistan last fall were honored with 2012 Marine Corps Aviation Awards.

Maj. Robert “Troll” Weingart, a Bell AH-1W Cobra pilot with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 469, won the Alfred A. Cunningham aviator of the year award, the Corps announced Monday. Cpl. Benjamin Hebert, another member of the squadron of Cobras and Bell UH-1Y Venoms, won the Danny L. Radish enlisted aircrewman of the year award.

Also honored was Yuma, Ariz.-based Marine Attack Squadron 211 – the AV-8B Harrier jet unit whose commanding officer was killed leading the counterattack on Sept. 14 at Camp Bastion – garnering the Lawson H. M. Sanderson Award for attack squadron of the year.
