1910 – Birth of Royal Air Force Group Capt. Sir Douglas Robert Steuart “Dogsbody” Bader, World War II legless fighter ace (shown above).
1930 – Death of Henrich Claudius Kroll, German World War I fighter ace.
1945 – First flight of the Hawker Sea Fury, a British fighter aircraft developed for the Royal Navy by Hawker. The last propeller-driven fighter to serve with the RN, it was also one of the fastest production single piston-engined aircraft ever built.
1967 – McDonnell Aircraft completes the 2,000th F-4 Phantom II.
1984 – Just 14 hours and two minutes after taking off from New York, Air France pilot Patrick Fourticq and his companion, race driver Henry Pescarolo, land their Piper Malibu in Paris, setting a world record for a trans-Atlantic flight by a single-engined light aircraft.
2011 – Two Libyan Mirage F1ED fighters landed in Malta after they were ordered to bomb protesters in Benghazi. Their pilots claimed political asylum.
