1897 – Birth of Alan Jerrard, British World War I flying ace who served in North Russia during the Russian civil war.

1945 – The first purely jet-powered airplane to operate from an aircraft carrier is a de Havilland Sea Vampire piloted by Royal Navy Capt. Eric Melrose “Winkle” Brown from HMS Ocean (shown).

1972 – Death of Friedrich Christiansen, World War I German seaplane fighter ace.

1980 – Judith Chisholm lands back her Cessna Turbo Centurion in London after a record-breaking, round-the-world solo flight.

1990 – At Detroit Metropolitan Airport, Northwest Airlines Flight 1482, a Douglas DC-9, collides with Northwest Airlines Flight 299, a Boeing 727, killing seven passengers and a crew member aboard the DC-9.

2010 – The Boeing X-37B completes its first orbital flight by landing at Vanderberg AFB in California.
