1908 – Birth of Karl Hermann Gotthard Handrick, German gold-medal Olympian and flying ace during the Spanish Civil War and World War II.

1937 – Hanna Reitsch sets a world record for helicopters when she flies a Focke-Wulf Fw 61 67 miles from Stendal, Germany, to Berlin.

1951 – Japan Airlines flies its first post-World War II flights, using Northwest Airlines Martin 2-0-2 aircraft flown by Northwest crews.

1955 – First flight of the Saab 35 Draken (shown above), a Swedish fighter jet aircraft.

1994 – Death of Kara Spears Hultgreen, the first female naval carrier-based fighter pilot; the U.S. Navy lieutenant perishes when her Grumman F-14 Tomcat crashes into the sea on final approach to USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72).

2007 – The first commercial flight with passengers of the Airbus A-380 is made by Singapore Airlines.
