Lease Woes Doom Virginia Aviation Museum

The Capital Region Airport Commission on Tuesday voted down a request to transfer a lease for the airport property that houses the Virginia Aviation Museum in Richmond to a new operator.

Despite numerous meetings over the past eight months, airport officials were unable to come to terms with the nonprofit Virginia Aeronautical Historical Society, which was attempting to take over the lease from the Science Museum of Virginia. The Science Museum had operated the aviation museum and its collection of vintage aircraft at 5701 Huntsman Road since 1990 but plans to close it Thursday.

“The president and CEO, on the one hand, and the proposed assignee, on the other hand, have been unable to reach an agreement upon mutually beneficial terms of a proposed assignment and assumption of the lease,” states a resolution rejecting the request to shift the lease to the society. The resolution was unanimously adopted Tuesday.
