Canadian Cadets to Fly in Warbirds

Laura Matheson admits she was “absolutely giddy” when she found out she was going to be able to fly in a vintage airplane.

Matheson, a sergeant in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, is one of 120 cadets from across Canada in North Bay for the next six weeks, and one of 50 who will be getting a flight in a Second World War-era trainer. “People were asking me to stop smiling so much,” Matheson, from Ottawa, said Wednesday.

The flights are part of the Raytheon Canada Yellow Wings Youth Leadership Initiative of Vintage Wings of Canada, a group from the Ottawa area which promotes an interest in aviation and related fields. “I’m really lucky,” she says. “How precious these aircraft are, the part they played in Canadian history…I’m very excited.”
