Airborne 01.13.23: Earhart Museum, Sam Graves, RV-10 Extended Range
Also: NATA Fueling Guidelines, SportAir Workshops, SkyWay's SkyStep, GAMA on SMS
Amelia Earhart's namesake charity, the Atchison Amelia Earhart Foundation, marked the 88th anniversary of her flight with the announcement of a museum bearing her name. The Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum in Atchison, Kansas will be an interactive, STEM-focused educational tour of her life, opening next April. US Congressman Sam Graves has been selected to serve as Chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. The selection puts one of aviation's own in charge of one of the biggest movers and shakers of the transportation industry, with oversight of a multitude of operational considerations throughout the country. Graves is hoped to be the right man for the job, bringing years of experience as a commercially-rated pilot. Sky Designs' new RV-10ER Extended Range fuel tank kit is already airborne, only a few months after beginning shipments in the summer of 2022. The first to use the kit was Richard Connell of Sydney, Australia. His RV-10, assisted by local builder assist company Synergy Air South, took to the skies in June of 2022. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-NextGen!!!

Airborne-Flight Training 01.12.23: Flt School Accreditation, Aerobility, LODA Changes
Also: Hot Spots Standardized, AZ CAP, EAA’s CA Council, Airbase Arizona Museum
On February 28, 2023, the Flight School Association of North America is offering a first-of-its-kind, full day seminar the day before the start of the FSANA annual conference and trade show in Orlando. Accrediting organizations typically operate two accreditation seminars during the calendar year. The seminar will fulfill the requirement which is included in the updated accreditation standards being rolled out in March 2023. Andy Braybrook, a 35-year-old Grantham, UK man, has been picking up the basics of aviation thanks to the disabled flying charity, Aerobility. A motorcycle accident 6 years prior caused Braybrook to suffer a spinal cord injury at the 7th cervical vertebra, putting him in a wheelchair. Braybrook was eager to take the flight training charity up on its offer, applying for a scholarship via Aerobility. We are pleased to report the elimination of a particularly onerous bit of FAA decision-making... by virtue of an act of Congress. H.R. 7776, the “James M. Inhofe National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023” -- which was passed by both the House and Senate and signed into law by the President just before year's end. Airborne 01.11.23: Scalebirds P-36, Aerobility, NWOC Warbird Conference
Also: Super Bowl LVII TFR, EAA Canadian Council, FAA-Korea Coop, ERBS Reentry
The Scalebirds P-36 test aircraft has been flying for a while now and as most flight test programs prove, there is always room for tweaking. The P-36 is turning out to be a solid attraction for warbird enthusiasts on a budget, powered by an uncommon Verner 7U Radial engine and designed for light aerobatics. Braybrook was eager to take the flight training charity up on its offer. A 'Must' Attend event for warbird operators and associates is barely a month away... firmly routed in educational outreach, networking and skill enhancement, the Nat'l Warbird Operators Conference has become a pivotal warbird event. Founded in 1993, the annual NWOC event brings together warbird owners, operators, and museum directors to address particular events facing warbird owners and to discuss common goals related to the ever-changing economics, operations and regulations pertaining to flying ex-military aircraft. Airborne 01.09.23: P-51 v Piper, Artemis Inspection, Lead-Free Avgas
Also: Dramatic Helo Rescue, Hot Spots Standardized, NASA's 747SP, Blackhawk Aerospace Acquired
Ask any taildragger pilot about the issues inherent in taxiing the average conventional geared airplane around a busy ramp... like the Pitts Special, Cessna 195, Russian SU26/29/31 Sukhoi series... or... the P-51 Mustang. So... as the year was coming to a close, two aircraft met in the worst possible way... the oft-warned nose to tail collision. A North American P-51D Mustang, N3333E, nicknamed 'Glamorous Glenn III', ran into the aft section of a Piper PA-46-600TP M600, N282TX, during taxi at Houston Executive Airport, Texas. Inside the Multi-Payload Processing Facility at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, engineers and technicians are conducting inspections of the heat shield on the Orion spacecraft for the Artemis I mission. Orion returned to Kennedy on Dec. 30, 2022, after splashing down in the Pacific Ocean on Dec. 11. In February 2022, a cooperative comprising the FAA and aviation and petroleum industry stakeholders established the EAGLE (Eliminate Aviation Gasoline Lead Emissions) program. The initiative set out to safely but surely eradicate the production and use of leaded aviation fuel by the end of 2030. The passage into law of the $1.7-trillion Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 allocated $10-million to the continued development of unleaded aviation fuels. Airborne 01.06.23: Walt Cunningham, A4A v The Bahamas, Autel EVO Max4T
Also: Anti-Helo Nonsense, FCC UAS NPRM, ThrustSense Autothrottle, LODA Correction
The legends of yesterday are disappearing at a breathtaking rate. Former astronaut Walter Cunningham, who flew into space on Apollo 7, the first flight with crew in NASA’s Apollo Program, died early Tuesday morning in Houston. He was 90 years old... and he was our friend (ANN's Jim Campbell still carries around his 'Turtle' card to this day, with Walt's sig). Cunningham was selected as an astronaut in 1963 as part of NASA's third astronaut class. Get this... the airlines are upset about FEES... at least, with fees that don’t line THEIR wallets. Airlines for America (A4A) has filed a complaint with DOT alleging unjustifiable, unreasonably discriminatory, anticompetitive, and unreasonable charges have been levied against its member airlines by the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Autel Robotics’s EVO Max 4T UAV has been unveiled as an intelligent, innovative flight platform at once suited to commercial, prosumer, and hobbyist applications. The EVO Max 4T’s suite of advanced autonomous flight technologies includes omnidirectional obstacle avoidance, and tri-anti interference. Airborne Affordable Flyers 01.05.23: LODA Relief!, AirVenture 2023, Dark Aero!
Also: Scalewings Speeds Up, CubCrafter Skis, Young Eagles Program, Electric Race
The FAA policy, established in July 2021, required certain aircraft owners and flight instructors to obtain a letter of deviation authority (LODA) prior to providing flight training in experimental aircraft—including the owners of homebuilt aircraft seeking training in their own machines. Tickets are now on sale for the 70th year of EAA AirVenture, the yearly home to the Experimental Aircraft Association’s gathering at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, WI. Oshkosh is home to what's likely the biggest grouping of GA aircraft in the entire world, with more than half a million attendees and 10,000 individual aircraft making the pilgrimage. DarkAero is the embodiment of a shared aspiration to develop a kit aircraft of surpassing speed, range, and efficiency. The brothers Ryley, River, and Keegan Karl, have plied their considerable expertise and energies with the DarkAero-1 -- a single-reciprocating-engine, low-wing, retractable-tricycle-undercarriage, normal-category airplane. Airborne-NextGen 01.04.23: FAI World Drone Racing, Amazon Delivery, B-21 Raider Uncrewed?
Also: ZeroAvia Hydrogen-Electric, UltraFan Platform, Ukranian Drone School, NASA's InSight
The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) has announced its selection of South Korea as the host nation of the 2023 World Drone Racing Championship. The competition, the largest and richest of its kind, offers contestants a prize pool of a cool $100,000. After a three year COVID hiatus, the tournament will see the world’s best drone pilots pit their skills against one another in head-to-head competition. As the larger world frantically occupied itself with holiday parties and last minute Christmas shopping, citizens of Lockeford, California and College Station, Texas marveled as the advent of Prime Air—Amazon’s much anticipated drone delivery service—played out in the skies above their respective towns. Amazon’s goal is to deliver packages massing five-pound or less in under an hour. Having made its 02 December 2022 debut, the Air Force’s new B-21 Raider stealth bomber has been safely returned to its California hanger. It’s security, however, is a nebulous and subjective construct, ever vulnerable to the escalating ambitions and wiles of those intent upon taking by force or subterfuge that which they cannot achieve by innovation and industry. Airborne 01.03.23: DarkAero!, Chinese Fighter Jets, Mexico Ramp Checks
Also: Sikorsky Protests Bell, ZeroAvia Obtains Approval, Airport Worker Killed, Harrier Pilot Extradition
DarkAero is the embodiment of a shared aspiration to develop a kit aircraft of surpassing speed, range, and efficiency. The brothers Ryley, River, and Keegan Karl, have plied their considerable expertise and energies with the DarkAero-1 -- a single-reciprocating-engine, low-wing, retractable-tricycle-undercarriage, normal category airplane. With a wingspan of just under 24-feet, and an empty weight of 750-pounds, the DarkAero-1 is not a large airplane. A Chinese fighter jet reportedly neared to within ten-feet of a U.S. Air Force reconnaissance aircraft over contested waters of the South China Sea. The Chinese pilot’s shortsightedly aggressive antics forced the USAF plane to take evasive action to avoid a midair collision of potentially dire consequence in international airspace. Mexico’s Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC) has announced its intention to increase the number of ramp checks its agents perform on foreign business aircraft and crews traveling into and around Mexico between 20 December 2022, and 20 January 2023. AFAC attributes the step-up to Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s decision to turn the enterprise of administering his nation’s airports to the Mexican military. Airborne-Flight Training 12.29.22: FAA v Alaska DPE, Boom Supersonic, NTPS Addition
Also: Ukranian Drone School, New FAA Weather Book, Flair Pilots, Pilot Vaccine Usage
The FAA issued notice that almost 140 pilots will be required to take a new checkride in order to retain their certifications after “defrocking” a longtime DPE in Alaska. Pilots who took their Instrument and Flight Instructor checkrides (both initial and add-on) with backcountry aviator Don Lee between July 2018 and May 2022 will be required to be re-inspected to keep those ratings - and complete the re-check within 15 days. From the sound of things up north, locals were not given notice directly, with most finding out about the issue from an FAA notice sent to local offices. Boom Supersonic has partnered with FlightSafety International as the exclusive training partner for their supersonic airliner. Flight Safety will develop a training program for Overture pilots, mechanics, and cabin crew. NTPS has just announced the creation of a new, non-profit business unit in a statement reading: “On behalf of the NTPS Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors of Flight Research, Inc, we are pleased to announce the acquisition of Flight Research Inc assets and the creation of a new NTPS not for profit Business Unit... Airborne-NextGen 12.28.22: Falco Xplorer, NASA Tilt Wing, CA Drone Fine
Also: H2-Powered Airships, Multimodal Hydrogen Airport, NATO-Spec Sensor Pod, Hermeus-Pratt & Whitney
Leonardo has completed the first phase of flight testing for its upcoming Falco Xplorer drone. The aircraft now moves on to the second phase of the campaign as part of the company's "Be Tomorrow 2030" plan. The Xplorer will be the largest UAV ever made by Leonardo. The company says it has everything it needs for a successful, combat-ready UAV platform, from sensors and aeronautics to software and control. Advanced Aircraft Company has been selected to develop a tilt-wing prototype UAV for NASA. The "aero-activated", uncrewed aircraft will make considerable use of 3D printed materials and lightweight alloys throughout the development process, from rapid iteration all the way to small scale production. Rajwinder Singh plead guilty to the charge of operating an aircraft without a permit, netting himself a $10,000 CAD fine. His drone operation fell under section 2(3) of the Aircraft Access Regulations of the Canada National Parks Act, which ensures that all parks are ‘no drone zones’. The statute has been gaining more attention this year, particularly after an embarrassing run-in with a UAV in September that grounded firefighting operations for more than an hour.
