The initial bolus of investigative material has been published in the ongoing search into the cause of the fatal collision between a P-63 and B-17 at the 2022 Wings Over Dallas Airshow. Airborne-Flight Training 03.14.24: UAL Hiring Pause, APA Wants 65, Piper 100i
Also: TRU Simulation, FedEx Strike?, Women Of Aviation Worldwide, Ansett Av Training A320 FFS
United Airlines will pause pilot hiring like its Boeing-family companion Southwest. United won't be expanding its fleet as planned, leaving it with a large pilot base following its hiring bonanza in 2021 and beyond. Carriers feel they have enough personnel to weather through the rest of the year, even accounting for attrition. United Airlines' VP of flight operations Mar Champion said that new hire classes would be paused in May and June, possibly to resume sometime in July. The Allied Pilots Association says it believes the pilot supply is "sufficient to meet forecast demand", so the mandatory Part 121 retirement age of 65 should not be changed. “The perceived pilot shortage is over, eliminating any further need for policymakers to consider changing the retirement age,” said APA President Ed Sicher. Piper's trainer-specific iteration of the Pa28 remains popular with Skyborne Airline Academy, with another order for 20 more filling out the manufacturer's order books. The school already has almost a dozen on the books, with an initial order placed in late 2023 as the first element in a multi-year fleet agreement. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!

Airborne 03.13.24: We Fly Deltahawk!, Kite Magnetics eTrainer, Pulsejet!
Also: FAA's New Budget, EUTELSAT Via BelugaST, SnF Warbirds, 2025 World Games Drone Race
ANN had an exceptional opportunity this week, with a chance to get a little operational experience flying an aircraft equipped with the Deltahawk DHK180 aviation diesel engine. The flight down from Racine, WI, the day before, covered a total of 818 NM, at an average 148 Kts True Airspeed and a total fuel burn of 45 gallons of Jet A -- nonstop. CKD Aero has partnered up with Kite Magnetics to create the Dakota e-Hawk, the “world’s most cost-effective two-seat electric aircraft”. The e-Hawk is intended to be the first in a lineup of kit aircraft using Kite’s KM-60 electric engine and running gear. The KM-60 is much like an old-school piston engine, offering air-cooled, direct drive propulsion with 60 kW (about 80 horsepower). The legendary sound of the old V-1 of WWII fame is back, except this time it's powering an uncrewed, combat-ready, UAV. The autonomous aspects of drones have finally caught up to the point where having a super cheap, simplistic jet engine makes sense. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unlimited!!!

Airborne-NextGen 03.12.24: Pulsejets R Back!, Mach 5?, DJI v Congress
Also: 1-gram Remote ID Module, Starship Ready?, Ampaire Acquires Magpie, Clay Lacy-Starlink
The legendary sound of the old V-1 of WWII fame is back, except this time it's powering an uncrewed, combat-ready, UAV. The autonomous aspects of drones have finally caught up to the point where having a super cheap, simplistic jet engine makes sense. North American Wave Engine Corporation got some civilian attention with the publication of its civilian-spec pulsejet engines. Stratolaunch is reporting that it has successfully completed the first powered flight of the Talon-A test vehicle, TA-1. This first flight represents a major milestone in the development of the country's first privately funded, reusable hypersonic test capability. Chinese drone manufacturer DJI took issue with a recent move in Congress, the "Countering CCP Drones Act", introduced by Elise Stefanik. The legislation would add DJI's parent company, Shenzhen Da-Jiang Innovations Sciences and Technologies, as well as any subsidiary or affiliate to the list of banned brands of communications equipment under the Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Act of 2019. That would absolutely kneecap DJI's presence in the US market... All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-NextGen!!!

Airborne 03.11.24: TA-1 Hypersonic!, Starship X 3, Biden Attacks BizAv
Also: Women Of Aviation Worldwide, APA Backs '65', Skyborne Buys Piper, Duncan Drone Repair
Stratolaunch is reporting that it has successfully completed the first powered flight of the Talon-A test vehicle, TA-1. This first flight represents a major milestone in the development of the country's first privately funded, reusable hypersonic test capability. Primary objectives for the flight test included accomplishing safe air-launch release of the TA-1 vehicle, engine ignition, acceleration, sustained climb in altitude, and a controlled water landing. SpaceX is gearing up for the third flight test of its Starship rocket, tentatively scheduled for March 14, pending regulatory approval. The aerospace giant has announced that a live webcast of the flight test will commence about 30 minutes prior to liftoff. President Biden's State of the Union address ruffled feathers at NBAA, thanks to comments pointing to a crack down on one of his easier targets… those high-falootin' corporate jets. The Biden admin put out a press release following the speech, taking aim at "making big corporations pay their fair share in taxes." As part of that mission, they outline a tax plan that would raise the corporate tax rate to 28%, "crack down on tax avoidance by large multinationals and big pharma"...and "eliminate tax breaks for corporate jets". All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unlimited!!!

Airborne 03.08.24: Vega Restoration, Alaska-Boeing Suit, AvFuel Bureaucracy
Also: Hartzell Rebrands POWERUP, JetBlue Contract, AAL Shops Airbus, USAF Warrant Officers
KE Works of Mount Dora, Florida is hard at work bringing a 1929 Lockheed Vega 5C back to life. The rebuilder, JKE Works, has completed its fair share of restorations in its time, with the company recently handed down to its 2nd and 3rd generation owners. Jim Kimball started things off, restoring some mundane GA Aircraft and good old classics like the Stearman, Travelair, and Beech Staggerwing. Three of the passengers aboard Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 have filed suit against the carrier and Boeing, citing the usual host of psychological issues seen or imagined in such cases. This trio would carry a hefty price tag in punitive damages for the defendants, $1 billion in all. The Biden administration was set to unveil new modeling to gauge the effect of sustainable aviation fuels on the climate, citing disagreements among developers. The revised model is supposed to help gauge whether corn-based ethanol derivatives will be able to qualify for credits when used in SAF development. Airborne-Flight Training 03.07.24: SWA Retreats, CBP Hires, Boeing Shorts Pilots
Also: WCA Scholarships, JetBlue Contract, Sioux Gateway, Veris VR Flight Simulator
A memo from Southwest Airlines has begun circulating out on the web describing the company's plans to halt all hiring through the rest of the calendar year, stating that the company's current size is sufficient for anticipated growth and demand. SWA has already begun rescinding conditional job offers to pilots in its pipeline, with water cooler talk sounding as if those with class dates past April are more likely to be canceled. CBP has reported that their Direct-Hire Authority to hire 200 air interdiction agents has been extended through Jan. 30, 2026. The air interdiction agent position is open to pilots with a minimum of 1,500 flight hours (500 hours can be waived), including 250 pilot-in-command, 75 hours of instrument time, and 75 nighttime hours. The union for Flight Technical and Safety Pilots took issue with Boeing's Flight Operations Group, citing poor pay scales relative to other pilot groups of similar importance at the company. The group checked in on a report drafted by the FAA as it works through safety and production issues at Boeing corporate, noting a "disconnect between public commitments to safety and quality made by senior executives at Boeing and the situations faced by Boeing employees in the workplace." Aero-TV: Wisk Looks to A Safe and Sustainable Future
Eliminating The Leading Causes of Aviation Accidents
Wisk policy manager David Oord took a moment out of his 2023 NBAA-BACE attendance to review the state of the industry with Aero News Editor in Chief Jim Campbell, going over some of the challenges faced by a company swimming upstream against old traditions and aging technologies.
Wisk is looking to bring their all-electric, 12-engine, autonomous air taxi to the Part 135 market, with all the newfangled software, hardware, and infrastructure that entails. The end result, Oord says, will be a far safer, more sustainable industry as a whole, eliminating LOC-I accidents with a combo of full automation and human oversight. Along the way, Oord lays out the plan for Wisk’s entry into commercial service, and why he believes they picked the perfect roadmap to beat the competition.

Airborne 03.06.24: Piper M700 Cert!, Spirit/JetBlue NoGo, SWA Pauses Hires
Also: Airbus Helicopters at HAI, USPA Summit, TRU Simulation, Scalewings Debuts 2
Piper Aircraft’s new M700 Fury achieved type certification by the FAA on February 29, 2024. The swift bird has a maximum cruise speed of 301 knots and a maximum range of 1,424 nautical miles. It is equipped with Pratt & Whitney’s PT6A-52 engine generating 700 shaft horsepower and the latest G3000 cockpit. The would-be merger between JetBlue Airways and Spirit Airlines is done for good, since the carriers fail to see a way where it could be completed within the shareholders' agreed-upon July 24th deadline. Despite their attempt to expediently handle the appeals process after the merger's blockage in court, both airlines feel that "terminating is the best path forward for both companies..." A memo from Southwest Airlines has begun circulating out on the web describing the company's plans to halt all hiring through the rest of the calendar year, stating that the company's current size is sufficient for anticipated growth and demand. Aero-TV: Gogo Announces First International 5G Customer
Fractional Jet Company AirSprint Selects Gogo
Gogo Business Aviation remains at the forefront of rolling out 5G networking for in-flight internet, and NBAA is an ideal time to strut their stuff in front of the well-heeled bizjet crowd. Gogo’s VP of customer sales James Zanino took a bit of time out of the 1023 NBAA-BACE to chat about the company’s plans, developments and challenges.
In October of 2023, Gogo announced AirSprint Inc., a Canadian Fractional Jet company, will begin upgrading its Cessna Citation CJ3+ and Embraer aircraft to Gogo 5G—making it Gogo's first Canadian fleet customer.
With the roll out of their brand new, nationwide 5G network, Gogo has been busy enough as it is. Add in global satellite connectivity and brand new challengers to the in-flight internet market and things get even busier. Zanino is pretty confident, however - Gogo is laser-focused on the world of aviation, a market that is much, much smaller than the residential market courted by Starlink.

Skydio announced that customers have begun receiving the first of its X10D, its flagship defense and government drone. The announcement follows the successful rollout of the older X2D, which has seen thousands of systems delivered across the USA and its allies around the world. Textron's Bell Flight Training Academy will be using a brand new type of Virtual Reality Flight Simulator at their flagship location, with a brand-new Veris VR Flight Simulator. The unit was recently shown off at the HAI Heli-Expo 2024, offering clients a clean-sheet design that combines a traditional full-motion experience with visual augmentation to make it feel even more like the real thing.
