1914 – Birth of Wilfrid George Gerald Duncan Smith, British RAF World War II ace.

1931 – A Bellanca CH-300, fitted with a Packard DR-980 and piloted by Walter Edwin Lees and Frederick Brossy, sets a record for staying aloft 84 hours, 32 minutes without refueling.

1981 – First flight of the Yakovlev Yak-55 (shown),a  Russian single-seat aerobatic monoplane.

1987 – West German pilot Mathias Rust, 19, evades Soviet Union air defenses and lands a rented Cessna 172 in Red Square in Moscow.

1997 – Death of Amy Lynn Svoboda, American military pilot; she dies in the crash of her Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt, becoming the first female pilot fatality in the U.S. Air Force.

2009 – A Nigerian Air Force Van’s Aircraft RV-6A Air Beetle crashes near Kaduna, Nigeria, on a training flight; the two crewmen perish.
