1882 – Birth of Sir Hugh Dowding, commander of the Royal Air Force Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain.

1909 – Wilbur Wright makes five flights in Centocelle, Italy, with King Victor Emmanuel III in attendance. During one flight, Federico Valle accompanies him and takes the first motion pictures from an airplane in flight.

1912 – William Lendrum “Billy” Mitchell makes the first flight by an American officer over German lines.

1962 – First flight of the PZL-104 Wilga (35 model show), a Polish STOL utility aircraft.

1992 – A U.S. Air Force C-130 Hercules carrying out an anti-narcotics mission over Peru is attacked by Peruvian Air Force Sukhoi Su-22s.

2005 – Death of Ezer Weizman, seventh president of Israel, commander of the Israeli Air Force and minister of defense; he also was a World War II and Arab-Israeli War fighter pilot.
