1919 – Birth of Toshio Ota, Japanese World War II fighter ace.

1932 – Luftschiffbau Zeppelin begins regular trans-atlantic services between Germany and Brazil using the Graf Zeppelin airship.

1950 – Operation Musgrave begins when Royal Air Force Avro Lincoln bombers are sent to Singapore to be used against the Communist guerillas of Malaya in the Malayan Emergency.

1956 – Death of William Bushnell Stout, American inventor and aircraft designer; his Stout 3-AT eventually became the Ford Trimotor.

1982 – Garuda Indonesia Fokker F28 overruns the runway at Tanjung Karang-Branti Airport, Indonesia, during very heavy rain, and caught fire; all 27 perish.

2011 – First flight of the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental (shown), the latest variant of the American widebody jet airliner.
