1896 – Birth of Arthur Clunie “Snowy” Randall, Scottish World War I flying ace.

1915 – First flight of the Sikorsky S-16 (non-flying replica shown), a Russian two-seat, biplane fighter.

1916 – Aircraft from the Imperial Russian Navy’s Black Sea Fleet seaplane carriers sink the Ottoman collier Irmingard, the largest ship sunk by air attack in World War I.

1956 – TWA Capt. William Judd flew his Cessna 180 “Star of the Red Sea” non-stop from New York to Paris – A distance of more than 3,600 miles across the North Atlantic; the flight takes just over 24 hours.

1965 – LAN Chile Flight 107, a Douglas DC-6, crashes into the side of La Corona Mountain in the Andes, about 1,200 feet below its summit, killing all 87.

2009 – Death of Giuseppe Ruzzin, Spanish War and World War II Italian flying ace.
