1902 – Gustave Whitehead flies his Whitehead Aeroplane No. 22 flying boat on a 7-mile flight over Long Island Sound in New York and lands safely.
1963 – First flight of the Short SC.7 Skyvan, a British 19-seat, twin-turboprop aircraft used mainly for short-haul freight and skydiving.
1974 – Death of Wilhelm “Willy” Thöne, German World War I flying ace.
1991 – An unarmed U.S. Air Force General Dynamics/Grumman EF-111A Raven (shown), crewed by Capt. James A. Denton and Capt. Brent D. Brandon, score a kill against an Iraqi Dassault Mirage F1EQ, which they manage to maneuver into the ground; it is the only F-111 to achieve an aerial victory over another aircraft.
2008 – British Airways Flight 38, a Boeing 777-236ER, crash lands just short of London Heathrow Airport in England with no fatalities; it is the first complete hull loss of a Boeing 777.
