Ohio ‘Thud’ to Be Restored

The F-105B Thunderchief won’t ever fly again, but a small team of restorationists is hoping to make it look like it could.

The group is restoring the F-105 that’s been sitting for years in front of Ohio’s Zanesville Municipal Airport. Right now, the Cold War-era plane is looking a little scraggly — corroded metal, holes here and there, and home to several wasp nests. In a month or two, though, the team is hoping the plane looks just like it did when it was in service.

“We’ll get it to the point where it’s actually looking like it just rolled out of the Republic factory in 1957,” said Kevin Korterud, one of the volunteers. “We’re very keen on getting the accuracy of it right.”
