Hawaiian Airlines’ parent said Monday that it has named its turboprop interisland subsidiary Ohana by Hawaiian, and said the service operated by contractor Empire Airlines will launch this summer with flights to Molokai and Lanai. Honolulu-based Hawaiian Holdings Inc. is launching the new carrier with two 48-seat ATR42 turboprop aircraft, which will be covered in designs by Hilo artist Sig Zane and his son, Kuhao.
“The name Ohana perfectly captures the idea behind this service and the role it will play in our community,” said Mark Dunkerley, president and CEO of Hawaiian Holdings and its subsidiary, Hawaiian Airlines. “This new service has always been about making it easier for friends and families throughout the Islands and from overseas to share time together. Sig and Kuhao Zane’s design weaves the concept of family with symbols for heritage and transportation, acknowledging our proud history as the first company to connect our Islands through flight.”
