Get Hands-On with Yankee Air Museum Bombers

The Yankee Air Museum (YAM) will present its 18th Annual Polishing Party and Bomber Buffing, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Saturday, April 6, at Willow Run Airport in Belleville, Mich. Participants will get a chance to help polish a four-engine Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bomber and a twin-engine North American B-25 Mitchell medium bomber. This is the last step in preparing for the 2013 flying and air show season.

There is no cost to participate in this family-friendly event, although its organizers encourage participants to bring a can of Meguiar’s Aluminum Polish and plenty of clean, soft rags.

“This is the best opportunity for the public to get up close and personal with flyable historic World War II aircraft,” said Ray Hunter, chairman of the YAM board of directors. “It’s fun, and it’s a tangible application of our mission to preserve and honor aviation history and its participants through a living, flying museum.”

The two planes fly regularly through the spring and summer and are never on display at the Museum’s Collections & Exhibits Building.
