Grimes Field Readies for MERFI

Aviators and flight enthusiasts will celebrate their passion at Urbana’s annual Mid Eastern Regional Fly-in (MERFI) at Grimes Field in Ohio this weekend. Youths age 8 to 17 will get a chance to experience flight first-hand as part of the Young Eagles program.

The 47th annual MERFI will be held from 5 p.m. today through 1 p.m. Sunday at the airport, located north of downtown Urbana and also known as Urbana Municipal.

This evening there will be a fish fry and beer garden for race pilots and the public. Camping at the south end of the airport (the lot beside Skelley Lumber) will be open for the weekend with a $5 donation. Events begin at 7:30 a.m. Saturday with a pancake breakfast served in the north side of the old hangar. Airplanes will arrive all morning. A live radio broadcast will begin at 9 a.m. through race time on Bellefontaine radio station WPKO-FM.
