A crew on Tuesday began recovering pieces of a Grumman G-44 Widgeon that crashed in the Hudson River near Germantown, N.Y., last Thursday. The crash killed the pilot and sole occupant, Michael Braunstein, 72, of Copake.
Todd Gunther, the investigator in charge for the National Transportation Safety Board, said about one-quarter of the wreckage has been recovered, including the main cabin door, pontoons and sections of the fuselage. The recovery operation will continue Wednesday, weather permitting, Gunther said.
The plane, built in 1943, is in about 20 to 25 feet of water and recovery can only be done during slack tides because of the currents in that part of the river. Once recovered, the wreckage will be removed to a secure location.
