1906 – Traian Vuia, Romanian inventor and aviation pioneer, flies his early own designed and built aircraft “Vuia 1″ about 40 feet at Montesson, France. This is the first well-documented unassisted takeoff and landing on a level surface by an engine-driven monoplane with a wheeled undercarriage.
1945 – First flight of the Douglas A-1 (H model shown) Skyraider, an American single-seat attack aircraft.
1980 – Death of Konstantin Konstantinovich Artseulov, Russian test pilot, World War I pilot and glider designer.
1997 – The tail of a Russian Antonov An-24 airliner breaks off enroute to Turkey; the plane crashes and kills all 50 on board. The accident led to the later grounding of all An-24s.
2010 – The first vertical landing of the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II, an American fifth-generation multirole fighter.
