U.S. Air Force Ret. Lt. Col. John Piowaty stood beside a supersonic jet as he answered questions from spectators at the TiCo Warbird Airshow in Titusville, Fla.

He explained the avionics of the Republic F-105D Thunderchief and his missions in the fighter-bomber during the Vietnam War as an Air Force pilot. On Saturday, he engaged everyone who approached on the flight line.

“Meeting the people is the best part and really rewarding,” Piowaty said. “Somebody has got to tell the stories.”

About the author

Online Editor I've been around airplanes since I was a kid. That's when my uncle, a professional pilot, showed me how to fly his Cessna 177 Cardinal. l later became a writer and editor, so covering the exciting and ever-changing aviation industry -- which I've been doing in Flight Journal's Flybys since the late '90s -- was a natural fit.
